Top Ten YA Awareness Books
Kelly here, with another Top Ten Installment.
Sometimes there are issues out there that are hard to face in the real world but I think that it’s important to know about them.
This top ten list includes YA books that I have read that shed some light on these issues and problems that are in the world in a way that makes us understand them.
1. Impulse – Ellen Hopkins
The story of how three friends in a psych hospital help each other after there suicide attempts. Never have I read a book that dealt with this issue so openly. It opened my eyes to the issue of several different illnesses and I have Ellen Hopkins to thank for that.
2. Speak – Laurie Halse Anderson
Like a slap across the face when it comes to dealing with the issue of Rape and not being able to deal with finding the words to help.
3. Crank – Ellen Hopkins
The affects of drugs not only on the user but also on the family involved. Intense, sharp and very emotional.
4. Hunger – Jackie Morse Kessler
Anorexia with a paranormal twist. It look’s at how hunger is a way of power for one and the downfall for another.
5. Otoli – Bryony Allen
The ordeal of bullying is one that affects many and this one highlights the problems that surrounds it. With a paranormal twist that rocked my world – it truly is a brilliant read.
6. Rage – Jackie Morse Kessler
Dealing with issues like rage and self harm really open your eyes up to look at how you deal with your own anger.
7. Wintergirls – Laurie Halse Anderson
You will find issues of Anorexia, Bulimia and loss in this one. Hardhitting and heated.
8. Perfect – Ellen Hopkins
This book tackles a LOT of different issues from Anorexia to sexuality. But most importantly it deals with how to accept yourself for who you are.
9. If I stay – Gayle Forman
Surrounding issues of loss. This one will bring tears to your eyes. Heartfelt and poignant.
10. Looking for Alaska – John Green
Surrounding issues of suicide and how to help deal with the loss of loved ones.



Some excellent titles up there, Kelly – and a very worthy subject for a list.
I am trying to think of some other titles that might fit in….
Letters from the Inside – John Marsden
Concerns a teenage girl writing to a penpal from prison. It is never explained why she is in there.
Checkers – John Marsden
The protagonist is narrating from within a mental asylum.
Dreamland – Sarah Dessen
Centres on an abusive romantic teenage relationship and how it affects the relationships that the girl has with other family and friends.
